On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me - A partidge in a pear tree. Partridges are are ground-nesting, non migratory birds of the pheasant family. According to Greek legend, the first partridge appeared when Daedalus threw his nephew, Perdix, off the sacred hill of Minerva in a fit of jealous rage. Supposedly mindful of his fall, the bird does not build its nest in the trees, nor take lofty flights and avoids high places In Wales, the grey partridge is now mainly restricted to arable and mixed farms , with small numbers associated with grasslands on sandy soils. Their population in Wales has deceased by over 50% during the past 30 years, mainly because of the loss of insect food on arable farms and seed food on grassland farms. The twelve days of Christmas start the day after Christmas (December 26) and run to the day before Epiphany (January 6).
