On the flight back to NY yesterday, I sat close to a young man with Down syndrome and his father. The young man seemed very high functioning and sat quietly for the first 2 hours of the flight. During the 3rd hour, he started shouting nonsensical words and rocking back and forth to calm himself. The father just patiently rubbed his back and spoke softly to him. It was everything I could do not to shout out to the young man YOU HAVE A PLACE IN THIS WORLD! and to the father YOU ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUL I HAVE EVER SEEN! I just turned my head and cried a little, knowing how hard it was for both of them. Departing the plane, I gave them both high fives and the young man hugged me. Such a beautiful picture of what it means to love and be loved.
