On the occasion of Guru Poornima: Q: Whats a Guru (Expert)? A: Guru is a realized person who himself/herself is the embodiment and epitome of knowledge (realized). Since knowledge exists only in the living of a knowledgable human, therefore Guru is that authenticated person (प्रमाणित व्यक्ति), who lives an exemplary life with purpose of guiding the society towards harmonious coexistence. Gurus thoughts, speech and actions are in harmony within, and in relationships and with nature. Q: How does one identify a Guru? A: Through his/her conduct in terms of character, values and ethics. 1) Gurus CHARACTER would be based on Righteous Earnings (Wealth procured through proper work), Conjugal Loyalty (abiding by marital fidelity) and Benevolent behaviour-work. A person who is in Guru status will never indulge in improper financial dealings, marital infidelity or Exploitative behaviour-work. 2) A Guru VALUEs justice in interaction with fellow humans. 3) A gurus ETHICS would be to ensure in society, the right-utilization and safety of resources (body-mind-wealth). Q: Can a student have many Gurus? A student can respect many persons whom he/she regards as equivalent to Guru, but his/her devotion for learning would only be focussed on one Guru. Because for gaining knowledge one needs to be in total sync with the Guru, which is only possible one person at a time. If a student is following many gurus then the seriousness and sincerity of the student comes in doubt. In the field of skills it is possible to engage with many teachers, but in the field of knowledge serious engagement only happens with one guru. In the event that the chosen gurus knowledge after being fully acquired by the student results to be insufficient, then the student has the option to seek another guru. If all the gurus are not able to quench the student, then it becomes the responsibility of the student to do fundamental research/discovery (अनुसंधान) on his own. Q: What are the defining qualities of a guru and a student? A: Guru: Authentic in living, completely transparent towards the student, straight forwardness, excellence in behaviour and work. Student: Hunger for knowledge, totally-completely devoted towards guru, obedient and disciplined.
