On the other hand, ... I was reading the very back pages of Sports Illustrated (which is where u look for coverage of womens hoops), when by happy accident I came upon the most surprising, thoughtful, sensitive & positive article. Its the story of Max Lenox. Hes not a superstar, not even a starter, but was elected by his teammates to be captain of the West Point basketball team for his leadership traits -- at a school where everyone is a leader. Max is a young African American man, who was born to a crack-addicted mother & raised from birth by a pair of white gay fathers. The family has overcome every kind of prejudice, from discouraging predictions about the babys physical & intellectual future, to the disapproval of relatives & other onlookers. It was their determined love that brought the child to health, strength & success, & finally gained the family not just acceptance but admiration -- & a long, personal piece in SI, less about the sport than the people. This is the world we are looking for.
