On this coming weekend in our industry’s history: April 5, 1870 — Choki Motobu, Okinawan Tomari-te karate master and pioneer, is born. He dies on April 15, 1944 at 74. April 6, 2007-Present — The nonpartisan Taekwondo Hall of Fame, headquartered in New Jersey, is founded and inducts many of the original TKD pioneers, such as Grandmasters Nam Tae-Hi Nam, Bok-Man Kim, Ki-Ha Rhee and Keun-Park Dong, who’s recognized as one of greatest Korean fighters of all time. Also inducted to represent the 1970s are Americans Mike Warren, Joseph Hayes, Albert Cheeks, Fred Absher and members of the American team that competed at the 1st World Taekwondo Championships in Korea in 1973. April 7, 1954 — Jackie Chan, Chinese martial arts/action film superstar, is born. April 7, 1995 — UFC 5 is the first MMA event to feature time limits: A 20-minute time limit for the quarterfinal and semi-final fights and 30 minutes for the finals.
