On this date, May 13th, in 1954, The Pajama Game opened on Broadway (at the St. James Theatre). The bright, brassy, rambunctious show featured a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, a book by George Abbott and Richard Bissell, and direction by George Abbott and Jerome Robbins. The producers’ first choice as choreographer was Jerome Robbins, but he was not available. Robbins recommended a newcomer named Bob Fosse for the job (who made his choreographic Broadway debut with the show). On opening night, one critic wrote, “The show was stopped with almost irritating regularity.” One of those showstoppers was “Steam Heat,” performed by Carol Haney, Peter Gennaro and Buzz Miller. The number, which introduced the signature Fosse style, stopped the show to such a degree during the out-of-town engagement that director George Abbott wanted to cut it. Associate director Jerome Robbins successfully lobbied for it to remain in the show. Enjoy this performance of “Steam Heat,” from the 1957 film version of “The Pajama Game,” featuring Carol Haney, Buzz Miller and Kenneth LeRoy… - Jerome Robbins
