On this date in 1898, President McKinley asked Congress to declare war on Spain. The enmity between the US and Spain grew largely out of Spains colonial efforts in the hemisphere, particularly its designs on Cuba. The explosion on the USS Maine some two months earlier fueled the Congressional fervor for war. Bowing to the increasing pressure to deal with Spain, McKinstry sought and received his declaration. The war was brief and effectively ended Spains colonial ambitions in our hemisphere, not to mention its efforts in the Pacific as well.
