On this date in 1927, a baby boy was born to Katherine and Mell Kilpatrick. The boy grew up during the Great Depression, went to school and worked where and when he could. He served in the Air Force during the tail end of World War II as a telegraph operator. In 1952, he married a pretty young lady named Sarah and they have been together now for 62 years. He spent over 50 years in the newspaper business and introduced new technologies to the United States newspaper industry. He was even on the cover of Editor and Publisher Magazine back in the late 1970s. Almost 50 years ago, he fathered a son who was sometimes a handful and most of the time a challenge but he always tried to go out of his way to spend time with me and teach me about life and learn from his experiences. As he is quick to say, I never seemed to listen but Dad, I do. I find myself more and more like you every day. Your dedication to your wife, your constant worry for me and my success and happiness and passion for success in whatever you do, I learned all these things from you. So today, you turn 87 years young and I am extremely proud to call you my father. I know you dont like to say I love you, but youve never failed to show us how much you do. Happy Birthday to my Dad, Mell Kilpatrick Jr. I love you and may you have many more. Something tells me you will! (Hes not on FB but hopefully my Mom will let him see this!)
