On this date in 1976, Platt National Park and Arbuckle Recreation Area were combined to form Chickasaw National Recreation Area. First organized in 1902, Chickasaw National Recreation Area is the oldest national park in Oklahoma and the only national park created at the request of a Native American tribe. Encompassing nearly 10,000 acres near Sulphur, the park provides numerous opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, camping and hiking.
