On this date in weather history, October 1, 1959: Hurricane Gracie made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in South Carolina on September 29. The storm moved further inland after landfall before it began to interact with an approaching frontal system from the west. Gracie became extratropical on the 30th as it continued to interact with the front as it moved northward along the Appalachians. The region was fighting a drought prior to landfall, so the heavy rains, which accumulated to 3.00 inches across Virginia, did not result in major flooding. However, locally higher amounts of rain that reached up to 13.20 in Big Meadows, VA resulted in minor flooding in the James Basin.
