On this day 1618 – English adventurer, writer, and courtier Sir Walter Raleigh is beheaded for allegedly conspiring against James I of England. He was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. He briefly fell from favour when he secretly married one of the Queens ladies-in-waiting, they were both sen to the Tower of London. On 17 November, Raleigh was tried for treason, due to his involvement in the main plot against King James. His final words (as he lay ready for the axe to fall) were: Strike, man, strike!
