On this day, 1920, a Detroit radio station (8MK – don’t know where that name came from) gave us the first broadcast of the news. It covered the local election results. It, no doubt, was a huge hit since it’s estimated that there were only 30 radios in the Detroit area that could actually receive the signals. You’ll notice from the first photo a lovely woman behind the mike. The executives figured it would attract a large male audience, but this was radio and there was nothing to see. FOX news later was able to figure out that problem. OK, that’s a lie. Neither photo is from the Detroit studio.
