On this day 26 years ago, November 15, 1988, a severe weather outbreak struck the central United States. In Arkansas, there was widespread wind damage. Hail was reported mostly in the western and southwest portions. Hail stones as large as baseballs fell near Mena. Seven tornadoes touched down, killing six people. The most significant tornado struck Saline, Pulaski, Lonoke, and Prairie County, carving a 43-mile long damage path. The tornado touched down initially near U. S. 167 in eastern Saline County, lifting near Hickory Plains in Prairie County. The first image is a map from that day, showing all of the hail, wind damage, and tornado reports. The second image was the Walmart store in Lonoke, which was virtually destroyed.
