On this day 85 years ago, my mother entered this sometimes cruel world. I can only imagine how her childhood was, being that she was in the South in the 1930s, 40s and part of the 50s, before moving to Chicago. She became one of the best beauticians in the city. Her clientele at one time included Mavis Staples. After she had me, she moved her shop into the house, and as a result, there were always a lot of women in our home. Mama was always there when people were cruel to me, making sure I understood that they didnt represent the world as a whole, but only a small portion. When she received her wings, life was basically over for me too. I didnt want to go on without her...but I had a praying grandmother, who was able to reach me, and make me realize some things from my mothers perspective. They say time heals all pain...thats a lie. I still hurt, and certain things I see or hear still make me cry about her. I have learned to live without her, but it doesnt hurt any less than it did in 1981. Mom, I know youre in a better place, and I want to wish you a happy birthday. I love you, and I will never forget even the smallest things that you did for me. I continue you mourn you until I join you.
