On this day in 1541, Margaret Tudor, Queen Consort to James IV and sometime regent, died. She arrived in Scotland from England at the age of 14 in 1503, to fulfil a marriage arranged by her father Henry VII as part of the Treaty of Perpetual Peace. After James died in 1513 at the Battle of Flodden Field, their son became King James V. She later married secondly Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus. Margaret played a difficult role, balancing rival family and national interests. Through her first and second marriages, respectively, Margaret was the grandmother of both Mary, Queen of Scots, and Marys second husband, Lord Darnley.
