On this day in 1838 the West Briton reported: ‘The streets [of Truro] were very seriously incommoded with boys running about with hoops. They caused a very great inconvenience to persons walking, but more particularly to persons riding or driving, and [the Mayor] had seen many instances of people who were almost thrown by the boys in Lemon Street and elsewhere. The boys now not only amused themselves by trundling their hoops in the road, but on the pavements also, and that morning a little urchin drove a hoop under his arm opposite the District Bank. If the constables saw boys driving on the pavement or in the streets, they were to take away their hoops and not return them.’ Reminds me a bit of skateboards and scooters really. Does anything ever change?!
