On this day in 1915, the ANZACs were ordered to evacuate the shores of Gallipoli. As they withdrew, our soldiers set up rifles triggered by a rudimentary time-delay system based around dripping water. These rifles firing well after friendly troops were clear of their trenches deceived enemy forces into thinking that the ANZACs were still occupying their positions. In part, this meant that out of the ~80,000 soldiers evacuated only a few dozen casualties were sustained. Today we reflect on the 8,709 Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Dardanelles Campaign. Their Name Liveth for Evermore.
