On this day in 1923, Calvin Coolidge took the presidential oath of office at about 2:30 in the morning. He had just become the 30th President of the United States. Coolidge had been vacationing at his family’s farm in Plymouth when he received news that Warren Harding had passed away (apparently of a heart attack or stroke). As I noted in last week’s presidential trivia question, Coolidge was the only President to be sworn in by his father (on.fb.me/1cezmJM). His dad was close by and happened to be a notary public. “Silent Cal” once stated: “I would like it if the country could think as little as possible about the Government and give their time and attention more undividedly about the conduct of the private business of the country.” He also once said: “The age of perfection is still in the somewhat distant future, but it is more in danger of being retarded by mistaken Government activity than it is from lack of legislation.” Exactly. It is more dangerous to OVERregulate than to UNDERregulate. If only Washington D.C. would take Coolidge’s advice.
