On this day in 1931 ‘Of Thee I Sing,’ a musical comedy by George Gershwin, describing the presidential campaign of Wintergreen and Throttlebottom running on the platform of Love, with embarrassing problems ensuing when the President-elect jilts his fiancé of Imperial lineage and marries a country girl who can cook, so that it devolves upon the Vice-President to marry his chief’s former fiancé, is produced in New York. Brooks Atkinson writing for the New York Times declared the musical “ Funnier than the government and not nearly so dangerous.”
