On this day in 1932 Pasty Cline (Virginia Patterson Hemsley) was born in Winchester, Va. Only 30 when she died in 1963, her little more than five year career made her the most acclaimed female vocalist of the century. Her rich tone, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice had perfect pitch though she was self-taught and could not read music. She said that at age 13 a throat infection and rheumatic fever actually helped improve her voice. This crossover country pop hit was her last. Written by Don Gibson it demonstrates why Johnny Cash called her The one, the only Patsy Cline.
