On this day in 1935: Opening night of a week-long engagement for The Garland Sisters at the Paramount Theater in Los Angeles. The act was so popular that their appearance was extended to three weeks. One critic said about Frances (Judy): ...about as talented an entertainer as one could imagine. Variety said (in their sixth review of Judy to date): Class act on bill is the Three Garland Sisters, which, for the Paramount booking seems to have concentrated heavily on Francis (sic) the youthful member of the family. Girls only do a couple of harmony numbers, leaving the rest of performance to kid sister, who is talented beyond doubt, and who scores heavily with her rendition of Eli, Eli plus a couple of songs in foreign tongue. To get an idea of Judys talent at this time, we have two of the three tests she recorded for Decca Records the previous March 29th. Those can be found on the excellent 2010 CD release: Judy Garland - Lost Tracks amazon/gp/product/B003T0J450/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003T0J450&linkCode=as2&tag=thejudyroom&linkId=FNVMUEXXRYOYBUBQ A real must have for any Garland fan! #judygarland #lostracks #garlandsisters #deccarecords #vaudeville
