On this day in 1939, my mother, her younger sister and parents - TopicsExpress

On this day in 1939, my mother, her younger sister and parents began their year-long+ journey from Riga, Latvia to North America via Sweden, the Trans-Siberian Railway, Japan, across the Pacific to Seattle. With the help of largely unsung hero CPR agent Mark Sorensen, they finally arrived in Montreal in 1941. The rest of their extended family - about 30 people including children - did not escape. They were herded into the Riga Ghetto and, in the winter of 1941, shot into mass graves at the Rumbula Massacre. My mother Ruth Schachter (nee Nisse) is 90 and lives in London, U.K. I have almost completed a radio doc about her story. We must never forget. youtube/watch?v=22l3G7afs38
