On this day in 1939, two and the half weeks after Hitler, Soviet Union invades Poland, Molotov declares that the Polish government has ceased to exist, as the U.S.S.R. exercises the fine print of the Hitler-Stalin Non-aggression pact—the invasion and occupation of eastern Poland. Hitlers troops were already wreaking havoc in Poland. The Polish army began retreating and regrouping east, escaping relentless German land and air offensives virtually jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
