On this day in 1957: Judy returned to London for her first engagement since she began her Concert Years six-and-a-half years earlier at the Palladium in April 1951. This time, she brought The Judy Garland Show to the Dominion Theatre in London. $180,000 was spend refurbishing the theatre for Judys run, which had advance ticket sales of $100,000. Judy played the theater through November 16, 1957. This show as still in the Vaudeville formant, with Judy playing the second half of the show, after intermission and comedian Alan King closed the end of the first act. Of note is that this act featured the new Garland Overture arranged by Buddy Bregman, who had started working for her that summer/fall. The overture was so incredible that it opened the rest of her concerts for the rest of her life. Distributed to attendees on opening night was a special single that Judy recorded for Capitol-EMI Records, featuring the Roger Edens song Its So Lovely To Be Back In London (which she sang in the show). Details of the record are at The Judy Garland Online Discography: thejudyroom/capitol/dominion.html Photos include Judy with Alan King; Judy in rehearsals; programme; Judy with Sid Luft at the October 9 press conference; Judy on stage; and the souvenir record. #judygarland #rogeredens #garlandoverture #dominion
