On this day in 1964, General Andrew O’Meara, Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command, briefed General Maxwell Taylor, Commander of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on rioting in Panama. The riots were a result of tensions between Panamanian and American high school students in the Panama Canal Zone which led to a break of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Panama. It wasnt until April 3, 1964 that relations were restored.
