On this day in 1976, Phantom of the Open Hearth first aired on PBS Channel 13. I had been listening to humorist/raconteur Jean Shepherd, for years on WOR Radio telling his stories about growing up in a 1940s steel town, but this was the first time I had ever seen him narrate anything on TV, and I was mesmerized! This was before VCRs and all I could do was watch it as many times as it aired before Christmas vacation was over. The story centers around Shepherds alter-ego, Ralph - in this telling, teenage Ralph- weeks before the junior prom, and is anchored by an outstanding performance by James Broderick as the old man. Some elements that would later re-appear in A Christmas Story are presented here first - like the grand prize LEG LAMP. Theres also his best friends- Schwartz and Flick... A house- in a kit- from Sears- delivered in individual boxes- by train… Dish night give-a-ways at the Orpheum… A riotous softball game… And of course, prom night. https://youtube/watch?v=HVCfWbSs6O0
