On this day in 1993 the Israeli Army launches the controversial Operation Accountability against terrorist forces in Lebanon. Ariel Sharon is the commanding general and recipient of most of the criticism. The Israelis were not terribly successful in finding members of the various terrorist groups while the invasion resulted in high costs in life and physical damage to the Lebanese. The most controversial aspect of the Israeli invasion was the mass execution of Palestinians in some of the refugee camps. While the actual killing was done by Lebanese Christian militias, there was a pervasive belief that Israeli forces assisted. In some ways, the invasion was the first failure of the Israeli military to achieve its goals through combat since 1948. The invasion worsened the domestic situation in Lebanon, alienating the Christian and Muslim populations. With a weakened central government, the power of the terrorist groups was actually increased. Into the vacuum of power in Lebanon came the Syrians who practically ran the smaller state for several years.
