On this day in Fort Benning history: 1965 The 1st Cavalry Division arrived in Vietnam and immediately cleared a 50-square-kilometer campsite, a helicopter pad and a barrier system of outposts, where guards were stationed to secure the camp. The division suffered its first casualty soon after arrival. A nervous guard shot Maggie the mule, the cavalry mascot (and the sole surviving symbol of the four-legged cavalry,) while she wandered the perimeter on a dark night. Command Sgt. Maj. Basil Plumley explained the circumstances of Maggie’s death to the 1st Battalion commander: “She was challenged and didn’t know the password.”
