On this day in Weather History (May 19)..... 1983-Severe weather and several strong tornadoes hit the region, resulting in 1 death and over 50 injuries. -At 9:36pm, a F3 tornado touched down a few miles north of Many in Sabine Parish, Louisiana destroying several mobile homes in the area and in the nearby town of Negreet. -At 9:50pm, high winds from a downburst struck the town of Zwolle. Two homes were severely damaged and a number of mobile homes were overturned. Three people were injured. -At 10:00pm, a F3 tornado caused extensive damage in the town of Robeline in Natchitoches Parish, LA. The same storm moved over the city of Natchitoches, damaging an Apartment complex, several mobile homes, and many trees. As many as 42 roads were closed at one time due to fallen trees. Many minor injuries were reported. -At 10:35pm, a F3 tornado touched down at Saline Lake and moved 23 miles thought Kisatchie National Forest in Winn Parish. A total of 325 homes were damaged or destroyed, including 50 in the south part of Winnfield. The Louisiana Forest Service estimated that 64,000 trees were destroyed. Ten people suffered significant injuries, and many others with minor injuries. -At 11:05pm, a F3 tornado touched down in LaSalle Parish, LA near the town of Urania then moved through the town of Olla before dissipating in the town of Kelly in Caldwell Parish, LA. In Urania, 70% of the buildings (about 300 buildings) sustained moderate to major damage. In Olla, 800 homes sustained major damage, with 25 being destroyed. In Kelly, many homes sustained significant damage, and many mobile homes were destroyed. In LaSalle Parish there were 30 injuries and 1 death, and in Caldwell Parish, there were 5 people injured. -At 11:15pm, winds estimated at 100mph struck the towns of Riverton, Clarks, Holum, Grayson, and Columbia all in Caldwell Parish, LA. About 75 homes were severely damaged or destroyed, and there were widespread reports of damaged trees and power lines. Eight people were injured with this storm. -At 11:20pm, a tornado struck the town of Herbert in Caldwell Parish. A total of 25 houses and mobile homes were either damaged or destroyed. U.S. Hwy 165 was closed by debris. A total of 6 people sustained minor injuries.
