On this day in history, William K. McEwen was born. He made his appearance on the earth in 1910. So much happened during his life and he was there for all of it, not kicking and screaming about how kids today didnt live up to a fantacy of life as he saw it. He did work on liquid fewell during the second world war, hoped to work on the Manhatton project, but, luckily, to my way of thinking, did not. He met Gertrude Johnson, a young and outgoing buyer for Macys in San Francisco, a city they both left Illinois for. She was Congregational, he was Catholic. They married in 1947 and had 4 girls, of whom I am the second. When my prematurity resulted in blindness, My dad, William began to do research on glaucoma, his lifes work. During the sixties, he switched his political party affiliation from Republican to Peace and Freedom to get it on the ballot. He loved gadgets and built my first Ham Radio transmitter, a DX 40. He always told us to do the best we could and that had to be good enough. He said not to worry about death. If we were told we were to die he said that,£ike Saint Francis, we should just keep hoing our beans. Love God and other people and the rest is just gravy. Although he was my father, I know next to nothing about either his childhood or his interior life. He was a quiet, shy man who had his own demons and was only kind and loving to us, his little family. He loved the changes in the Church brought about by Vatican II. Computers fascinated him and he learned how to program early on. May peace be with a good man on his birthday.
