On this day in #history, the Spanish-American War came to end in 1898, just three months after it started. Fortunately, no U.S. Army Chaplains were killed in this conflict, though many served to nurture, care and honor American Soldiers throughout the War. The invasion of Cuba during the War marked the first time since the Civil War that chaplains participated in combat operations, the first time they accompanied American troops into a land not contiguous to the United States, and the first time American chaplains went into a conflict as official noncombatants. Among the notable chaplains from the Spanish-American War were Chaplain George W. Prioleau, a Buffalo soldier who fought for the equal treatment of African American soldiers in the Army; Patrick Barry and Thomas Cusack, two future American bishops; and Thomas Ewing Sherman, son of Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman.
