On this day, in the year 1603, James VI The King of Scots was crowned James I, by the Grace of God King of England, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith During his reign in England, James sought to continue the Golden Age that the Elizabethan reign brought to the kingdom. An avid scholar, he wrote several books including The True Law of Free Monarchies and Basilikon Doron both of which focused on politics. He supported the works of the people such as William Shakespeare and Sir Francis Bacon and thus helped nourish the literary culture. The Plantation of Ulster and colonisation of the Americas began and thus truly began to create the Empire which lasted until the 20th century. An advocate of a unified Britain, James VI and I sought to establish a single parliament for his three kingdoms. After the Union of the Crowns, he moved his power house in England, it being the largest of the three realms. He later styled himself King of Great Britain and Ireland, albeit this was not official.
