On to todays second blow... I waited on hold forever with BCBS to ask about mental health office visit benefits for Denis to finally be put thru to a delightful girl that was so apologetic that she would have to refer me to Carolina Behavioral Specialists who they contract WFUs coverage out to. So I call them and they are very helpful going thru the list of psychologists that Denis pediatrician gave me. After talking, we both felt calling two centers in W-S first that do assessments and have psychologists as well as certified therapists on staff were a good start. So the first one I call was nice enough as I explained my 7 y/o son was just adopted a month ago, has institutional behaviors and a history of auto-aggression but as soon as I mentioned he barely speaks English but understands it pretty well, she asks what language does he speak? As soon as I say Bulgarian, the old bat says no we wouldnt be able to help you with that child. Click. Christ, seriously?? The second group is going to call me back tomorrow after they check to see of they have someone on staff with an opening that is good with kids his age and they are also going to see if they can reach out for a translator if need be. Now, I realize I am no expert but I have been working with and/or helping out with special needs kids of one sort or another since I was in my teens. Never in my life have I shied away from a child because they do not speak my language or are non-verbal. I am having a really hard time with the amount of professionals I am coming into contact with that are so reluctant to even consider working with him. Its the craziest thing Ive ever seen. Denis behaviors are not that out-of-the-ordinary and he tries so hard to communicate that I am flabbergasted at all of this. Do these people in the treatment centers and in the schools deal only with normal, perfectly behaved, easy, English speaking, verbal children only every single day or what? I mean really? Afraid of a challenge much, folks? Damn.
