#OnThisDay 1973: Queen Elizabeth II opens the new London Bridge over the River Thames. The monarch, Queen Elizabeth II arrived by boat at the quay of Fishmongers Hall, where crowds had gathered to watch the opening of the new bridge and possibly catch a glimpse of the Queen as she walked around the well-built structure. The new London Bridge took five years to build replacing the 19th century stone-arched bridge. The bridge was designed by architect Lord Holford and built by engineering company Mott, Hay & Anderson from 1967 to 1972. The cost of the impressive structure in the heart of London was 4 million pounds, now in 2014 at approximately 47.9 million pounds. Institute of Historical Research’s workshop on Locating London’s Past enabled researchers to map and visualise textual and artefactual data relation to the 17th and 18th century London.
