Ona has many street phobias. She is very anxious and afraid of - TopicsExpress

Ona has many street phobias. She is very anxious and afraid of almost everything outside of her home. Although by appearance, Ona looks like a robust Rottweiler, she is actually very fearful. Walking her has been such a chore for her parents, they have resorted to merely taking her out for potty breaks. We worked with Ona a few years ago, and although we made some progress, we wanted another shot at helping this girl. For the last two weeks, I have been working with Ona, and have had some really great success through a process called Name and Explain, which was pioneered by world renowned animal trainer Kayce Cover. Although I only have a short window of time to work with Ona each day, I have used my time to help Ona learn to understand the world around her. I do not want to overwhelm her with too much at once, but she is doing really well. I decided to use a prong collar, because it gives me a chance to communicate with her in a way I had not been able to do in the past. Ona was on a martingale collar, and honestly she couldnt care less about pulling on that collar. With the prong, I am able to use some pressure and release protocols (you dont really see that in the video), and not have her drag me down the street. When Ona goes into flight mode, even Andre the Giant would not have been able to hold on. She is a large fearful dog, so I made some very deliberate choices in my approach to Ona. We have a long way to go, as we are both learning, but I feel really great about her progress so far. This video is after not seeing her for 2 days, and i was delighted to see her recognize my cues. I will try to take more footage of Ona, so that I can show my progress as a Namer and Explainer (I have a lot of work to do) and Onas progression into confidence.
