Once, I got off work early, along with my co-worker, Grip (who my old Ryans friends would remember as Kevin, the cook who was always drinking booze from a flask in the storage room, lol). He offered me a ride home, and I gratefully accepted, as it was a three-mile walk. He drove me to my moms house, apologizing for his rusty grocery-getter all the way. Im sorry I aint got nothin! My ride is a piece of junk!, he yelled over the crappy speakers, shaking his head as his car choked and sputtered down the streets. I assured him Id been in far worse automobiles in my day, gave him directions, and he said, Hey, thats close to my place! The closer we got, he became more animated, remembering the old stores and shops of the Byrne/Dorr area. We made it into my neighborhood and to Moms charmingly broken-down house in the hood, and he fell silent as he pulled into the driveway. I tried to give him some money for hooking me up, and he shook his head slowly, then whistled, through his gold teeth, You know what, Judi?! I never realized it, cuz you talk all proper... But you poor, too! Damn! Yall broke just like my ass!! I laughed, and told him he should consider himself a wealthy man, because he obviously still had the desire to help out people when he could. And he replied, You right! So ask me anytime for a ride! My car may be a shitmobile, but its more car than a lot of people got! So bear that in mind when youre feeling broke and embarrassed about it: Rich and Poor are perceptions, and no one has ever become poor by giving. ;)
