Once again the debate has been rekindled over non native tropical milkweed, and so quickly the lines are drawn and canons are fired. Why the anger? Its passion. We all want to do the right thing, believe we are, and when we find out that something weve been doing might not be so great, its easy to feel personally attacked and slandered -- even though no personal attacks or slanders have occurred, just the sharing of opinions and links. I always ask why we even need tropical milkweed. And further, why do we need non native plants if were wildlife gardeners? Tallamy and Darkes latest book, The Living Landscape, says diverse structure is almost as important as plant origin, but if you can you should go native first. Theres no reason to not go native with milkweed -- we have well over 100 species.
