Once again the pain and darkness have been brought to the - TopicsExpress

Once again the pain and darkness have been brought to the forefront of those who know and understand the its presence and depth. Robin Williams is only one example of this misunderstood darkness... At the risk of offending some, I cant imagine if those who have negative remarks to make would much appreciate if the shoe were on the other foot. What if those who have died of cancer were labled selfish? What if they were told to just get over it? What if we simply refused to see that they are dying inside? Robin Williams was a Son, a Father, an Uncle, a Brother. He was human just as we are. To focus in on the choice to end his suffering as selfish is to misunderstand what depression, the illness did to his thinking, his body. He couldnt just get over it...He did seek help. I know from experience that even with help, the darkness of the illness or disease can be so devestating. It can take years before a mix of medicines are found that can help bring about some peace. Just medicating isnt the answer however. When someone commits suicide, the brain isnt healthy at all. The chemicals are so imbalanced that the thinking becomes irrational to those who are healthy. Unless you have experienced this hell of imbalance, the darkness, the demons that threaten to undo us, please dont assume that we are being selfish or that we need to just get over it. Depression is so much more than most people will ever know. Suicide in my opinion isnt a cowardly act. As humans, we can only bear so much pain and darkness. When there seems to be no way out (logically), suicide appears to be the only option. If you know of someone who is depressed dont be afraid to ask the tough questions or get that person help. Bottom line is that we really dont want to die, we just want the trauma of this darkness to leave us alone. We want to be free of the pain, the imbalance of our bodies. Deep depression isnt something that we bring on ourselves, no more than say those with cancer... Living with depression simply isnt living. Sometimes the illness wins the war, sometimes it doesnt. ~~Shirl
