Once again today many in the fast food industry across the country - TopicsExpress

Once again today many in the fast food industry across the country are walking out on their jobs in protest of not making a living wage. I want to rant a little. Business paying $8.00 a hour have employees who count on benefits from the government. Why should our tax dollars help pay the wages/benefits for the employees of a profitable company? Forcing the tax payers in this country to help support your workers as you are making a ton of cash is not fair to those of us that pay taxes. Profitable companies should have a moral obligations to pay employees a living wage, but instead that moral obligation is spread across everyone in the country that pay taxes instead of just the people that benefit from the service these workers provide. Slightly higher prices for customers of establishments that currently pay low wages or lower profits for these companies is a much better deal than the entire country spending tax $ on supporting these workers whether or not you frequent these low paying establishments. I do not want my tax dollars subsidizing everyone else’s McDoubles or Wal-Mart purchases. Time to realize that the low prices at these business that pay their workers min. wage or not really low. We are all paying through our tax dollars to offset their labor costs. Now consider that all of the employees of McDonalds and Wal-Mart could have their wages doubled while only raising prices to the point of costing the average customer around 60 cents more per trip to McDonalds and less than 5 additional dollars per $100 spent at Wal-Mart. Just these two companies alone raising their wages to a living wage would remove 3,000,000 people from qualifying for government assistance. Who should pay for these people and their families to live? The tax payer who receives no direct benefits from their work or the corporations making billions by employing them? Something a lot more efficient about putting the money in the hands of the workers instead of first filtering it through the government and back to low income workers. End Rant.
