Once and for all “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Titus 3: 4-5 You had nothing to do with it. It was not because of a choice you considered or a decision you deliberated over. Your personal ethics had no bearing on it. Your good deeds mattered nothing at all. In fact, you were completely incapable of performing any act that would gain what God has for you. What you have in Christ is all Him and it is for all time and in everything no matter how far you have fallen or how pure you have been. God’s mercy is undeserved, yet it flows through you. God’s grace has never been earned, yet it covers you through and through. Eternal life in heaven cannot be purchased by church merits or religious position. Yet it is freely given to the vilest sinner and to the most self-righteous saint. It is a gift from God that can never be taken away. Even the devil with his doubts and discouragements has no power to remove what the Lord has provided for you in Christ. God has washed you clean. He has set you free. The chains that bound you have been released. The person you once were you will never be again. You are a child of God, a member of the heavenly court, a part of the eternal family and the apple of God’s eye. You are not going back to the filth, failures and frustrations that once defined you. You walk with your head high, your voice determined and your focus ahead. For you truly are loved by the Lord once and for all. Of course you still sin on this side of eternity. But each failure, every mistake, each time you speak wrongly or are caught in a wrong action, God’s Spirit takes out the washcloth of grace and cleans your heart once more. This does not mean you take sin casually. It means that you see sin more seriously. You know what it costs your Heavenly Father every time you turn away. Today, walk in the choice God has made concerning you; no other decision matters more than this.
