One January after i had had a blast of a festive season was payback time.I had been the hero of the village buying meat and beer for everyone who cared to eat and drink.I did it as if the world was coming to an end.I fell prey to those bar hyenas who tell you endless stories most of them flattery.They choose very sweet stories and catchy lines line I see one day you will become a very rich man... they would go ahead and convince you that they have analyzed your generosity and concluded that you will end up rich very soon.All this happens as you sip one for the road, as you get tipsy, the only word coming from your mouth would be pewa kitu the barmaid would not leave your table without cash money, i would make several trips to the ATM to consolidate my popularity and to not send the wrong signal to the audience.These guys always have a deal that is almost going through or a post dated cheque which they use to borrow money and drink your beers on the pretext that utarudishiwa mkono when the day comes.They would mill around me listening as if am the wisest man south of the sahara, every few minutes a flattery would come my way which i would respond with calling another round.Reality comes in January when you realize you are penniless and you need to commute to and from work.This is the time you discover that the buses that leave at 4 am are cheaper than those that leave later, you discover that if you board from Dagoretti corner, you might pay half that is after walking for 45 mins.Evenings are less stressful as there is no pressure of getting home but that doesnt make walking from town to home any fun. My good friend James Wakaba fell for the tricks and is having a hard time walking and waking up earlier than required.By the way the 4 am bus arrives in town at 5 am and the office opens at 8, you must get something to do with a whole three hours which is not easy for a self-induced-broke lad.I know he is not alone, mtatoboa.
