One afternoon, according to 13th-century Sufi folktale, the beloved character Nasreddin, a humorous philosopher and wise fool, was sitting in a café with his friend, discussing serious matters of life and love. When the friend asked if Nasreddin was ever interested in getting married, he replied that years before he had set out to find the perfect wife. In Damascus he had found a wonderful and beautiful woman-but she wasnt spiritual enough. Then, in another city he found a spiritual woman, but they didnt communicate well together. Ultimately, in Cairo he found what he was looking for-She was the ideal woman, spiritual, gracious, beautiful and at ease in the world-perfect in every way. When the friend asked why he hadnt married her, Nasreddin replied, Unfortunately, she was looking for the perfect man.
