One can image the surprise of the German troops who spent many weeks preparing for the onslaught that was to be unleashed at Verdun (all the time labouring in ignorance of what they were about until the last possible minute when they were finally filled in on the plans for the attack) and after having been assured by their commanders (like the British were at the Somme, still in the future) that the heavy artillery amassed for the attack would surely eliminate all effective opposition, that after the attack was delayed for a full 9 days due to bad weather, that that the enemy was still capable of resistance (just like the Somme) which resulted not only in blunting the assault but causing a significant number of casualties as well.
