One day while out on the open playa of Burning Man with my - TopicsExpress

One day while out on the open playa of Burning Man with my Portrait Cart I set up and was ready to go. Upon the first person coming up for a portrait I realized my trigger to pop the strobes wasnt working. (It turned out later that it was a channel issue). Before I had time to trouble shoot it I was asked by a few people for shots and therefore did some without the flashes. At one point I was feeling perturbed, preoccupied with the problem and as she approached I almost felt a hint of anger. Not at her, but at the fact that my gear wasnt working the way I wanted and here I was facing such a perfect fun example of the art and individual expression that so many bring to Burning Man and I was without my tool that made my shots there mine. The lights are my thing. I actually tried explaining my way out of shooting her to instead trouble shoot my gear but she insisted I take some shots of her. Being Burning Man you seize the moment or its gone. I sucked it up, dialed in new settings and went to work trying to get something I would be happy with later. Even as I looked at these a few days ago I wasnt sold on them. But then, with just a few slight adjustments they came to life. Lesson Learned: Dont ever deny a gift. Sure it wasnt what I wanted at the time and I was admittedly letting my ego take over about the way things were transpiring but after all that, I have a few shots that have turned out to be favorites, not only from this year but all three years Ive attended. So if conditions or the situation arent as perfect as youd like just suck it up and use your brain. Dial in what you know, work to the best of your ability because you never know. What you get might be gold, even if it just needs a little polishing.
