One fascinating fact that I discovered while researching Kents - TopicsExpress

One fascinating fact that I discovered while researching Kents surviving pre-Civil War houses is that women owned a heck of a lot of land here locally in the 19th century. They freely engaged in real estate speculation as well. Women owned a lot of land here throughout the 19th century, and yet, they could not vote. They were land owners, but their gender alone kept them from access to the ballot box. These women were quite savvy in the areas of land and real estate. They knew what they were doing and I admire their moxie and their ability to deal in land and real estate transactions. More women seemed to own land than did men and I have to wonder why. Perhaps it was about dowry, inheritance, security after ones spouse died or something along those lines. Anyway, I found this fact to be really fascinating and eye opening!
