One hundred fifty years ago, on April 27, 1864, August Scherneckau of the 1st Nebraska Cavalry cares for a wound: Wednesday, April 27, 1864 I finished a letter and sent it to Egge. The boat left today, loaded mostly with cotton. My leg was hurting me more than usual; a change in the weather is imminent, and I am afraid that with my wound I will have a dependable barometer for some time at least. The treatment of my wound is fully in accordance with the coldwater method. Nothing but coldwater compresses have been applied from the time of my injury until now, changed frequently at first but now only at longer intervals. The same treatment is applied to all cases. The healing is achieved only through coldwater treatments, even where a limb has been amputated. Severe thunderstorms with heavy rain in the evening. This weather causes quite a bit of pain in my wounds.
