One hundred fifty years ago, on September 14, 1864, Captain Thomas N. Stevens of the 28th Wisconsin Infantry visits his sick soldiers: Sept. 14th … Have been to hospital to see the sick ones. Robinson is worse, & failing fast I think. Don’t think he will live the week out. The doctor reports Hardell “died of congestive fever.” The fact is he killed himself eating blackberries & huckleberries. He had had the ague—was excused Tuesday morning by the Surgeon, — went down town & ate, (so the boys say) 2 cans of fruit. In the afternoon he laid down & went to sleep, & never knew anything again, dying the next forenoon. We had a cool, splendid night for sleeping last night. Another man of Co. “H.” died last night. One of Co. “A” is thought to be too low to recover. We hope the sickly season is about over. More tomorrow —
