One hundred years ago today, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, marking the outbreak of the First World War. By wars end in November 1918, at least seven million civilians were dead, an estimated 21 million soldiers were wounded in body and spirit, and millions of people were uprooted from their homes. The profound loss of human life left most Europeans extremely reluctant to enter into another war, but the reverberations of World War I echoed into the 1930s and helped to spark World War II just two decades later.
