One interesting development about the influx of foreign talent in Singapore is how non-Malays now refer to themselves as native Singaporeans. For decades, there was an attempt to diminish the Malay claim to being natives of the island. This is despite the fact that legally and historically, Malays are recognised as being the natives. Yet in socio-political discussions, the claims that there are no native communities in Singapore were commonly made. Now, we are told that there are native Singaporeans. But instead of recognising the Malay position, it includes all the different communities. From zero to multiple native communities within just a few years. The Malays were told repeatedly that they were migrants. Now the non-Malays claim to be natives. Amazing.
