One issue that seems to come up quite often when I talk to teachers is the amount of technology we are exposing and requiring of our students. Teachers who are forced to use technology are frustrated and feel de-valued. Those that are given the option to use it are, at times, pressured to over emphasize its use. As a career educator and parent of 4 CCS children, I believe technology use should be strictly up to the teacher. If they choose that tool because other methods are less effective, so be it. If they choose to not use technology, so be it. Our teachers should be trusted to use their professional judgement to determine when and IF technology is appropriate. Preparing children to function in a tech driven world is more about providing skills that translate directly to their personal success. Those skills included communicating with people, developing an academic work ethic, caring for others, being self aware and solving problems by thinking analytically. Sitting an elementary child behind a computer screen up to 2 hours of every school day does not accomplish this and never will. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I way off base on this one?
